Entrepreneurship Minor, 2025

WHY WEBER STATE

I came to Weber because I don’t like driving to SLC 馃槉. It is close by. Also, it was recommended by my brother-in-law. He graduated from 91风流 with a Masters of Education. This is actually my second Bachelor's degree. I got my first in Psychology from Utah State University, but am now on disability retirement so I found myself with the time and the desire to further my education. I was able to come back to school, and Weber State was a good fit.

WHY ENTREPRENEURSHIP

I started out in Secondary Education, in English Teaching, but decided I didn’t like the focus on social issues. For English teaching I had to take creative writing classes, and realized I liked writing. So I changed my major to creative writing, but still wanted some structure too, so I added a minor in Professional and Technical Writing. One day, on campus, I walked by a sign for the Entrepreneurship Minor. I thought, “I want to do a business in self-publishing.” The minor seemed like a perfect fit. So I enrolled, and I loved it. I loved it so much, I convinced my son, who is also a 91风流 student, to add it as his minor, as well. I also gave a shout out to my English class – told them about the minor and the ins and outs of entrepreneurship. I recommended it to anyone that has any room in their schedule. It is the perfect complement to any degree.

PROFESSOR IMPACT

In the English department, Dr. LeTourneau and Dr. Paul both inspired me and made me feel like they cared and were willing to invest their time in their students and their success. But in Entrepreneurship, Professor Stoddard has had a great impact. He’s hilarious. He’s also incredibly supportive and understanding. I had to withdraw early one semester due to some medical stuff, and he was wonderful to work with me and help me out. I couldn’t have done this without him.

ADVICE FOR OTHER STUDENTS

Get organized. If you can organize your assignments and classes and know what you need to do ahead of time, then it’s easier to stay on track. And, it’s always easier to stay on track than it is to catch up. The difference between my experience this time and my previous degree is knowing how to juggle different priorities.

WHAT'S NEXT

I am going to take some time to write. I may try to find a job - something part-time. I will definitely spend time with my family. My husband and I do a doggy day care and boarding service, and we will continue with that. I guess we are already entrepreneurs. Until I started my minor, I didn’t realize how many in my family were entrepreneurs. Apparently, it runs in my family!

GRATITUDE

I’ve loved learning. I’ve always loved it – I am a life-long learner. This has really fed that drive. It’s allowed me to learn things that I might not have tried otherwise. It’s been wonderful to meet people and to realize that no matter what you think the state of the world is, there are always people that are willing to put themselves out there to help others.
