The Wasatch Boulder Off

How it Works

Each week, a different wall section will be reset at each gym. Various boulder problems ranging in point value will be set and labeled with a WBO tag. Each participant will complete their routes one week from the new set. Scores will be an average of each participant’s top five weekly scores.

• The Rules

  • Participants must enter scores for all four weeks
    • Scores will be recorded in an weekly
  • Only the top 5 scores per participant will be used for weekly scoring
  • At least one week of scores must come from a different gym that isn’t the participant's home gym
  • Participants must be 16 years or older to participate

• Description of Participant Categories

  There will be a female, male, and non-binary division for the following four difficulty categories:

  • Beginner: V0 - V3 or Yellow - Green - Grandeur Peak
  • Intermediate: V4 - V5 or Green - Red - Mount Olympus
  • Advanced: V6 - V7 or Red - Blue - Ben Lomond
  • Open: V8+ or Pink - White - Mount Nebo

• Finalist Selection Process

  At the end of four weeks, the competitor with the highest average score in each category will be invited to represent their gym in the on-sight final competition. Each gym will send 12 competitors (one from each gender/difficulty category) to finals.

• Identifying Your Starting Category: How to find your V-Max

  The hardest grade you’ve been able to complete at least three times in the last couple of months. Sandbaggers suck, don’t be a sandbagger. We will re-assign your grade category based on your weekly performance. You can't go back down once you get bumped up a category.

• Route Setting & Scoring

  Each gym will have a new boulder set weekly; you will be scored only on the new boulder problems. The new set will be tagged with WBO tags that will include the point value of each climb. . Scores for the week must be submitted by the end of the day on the following Monday to get credit. 

  Scoring

  Routes will be marked with designated WBO tags. Each route will be given a point value depending on the grade.

  For example,

  V0 - 1, 2, 3 

  V1 - 4, 5, 6

  V2 - 7, 8, 9

  V3 - 10, 11, 12

  The top 5 scores from each week will be averaged

  *Skip more than one week, and it will affect your average*

  Scores cannot be modified once they are entered. You can only have one submission per week. All routes for the week must come from the same gym.

  Day of the Week New Set

  • Momentum Millcreek: Monday (no set on 09/02 due to Labor Day, first set will be 09/05)
  • Momentum Sandy: Wednesday
  • Momentum Lehi: Tuesday
  • The Quarry Indoor Climbing Center: Monday
  • Bouldering Project: Tuesday
